A solar carport is a canopy structure installed over a car park with solar panels mounted on top. It transforms unused airspace into a clean energy asset while providing weather-sheltered parking for staff, visitors and fleet vehicles.
KLY Energy delivers EN 1090-certified solar carport projects for UK commercial sites, from structural engineering and foundation design through to steelwork erection, electrical works and grid connection. Every structure is engineered for the specific site, with certified installers managing each stage of the build.
Solar carports are particularly valuable for sites where roof-mounted solar is not feasible, whether due to structural limitations, roof condition, or lease restrictions. They also pair naturally with rooftop solar to maximise total on-site generation capacity. For planning guidance, see our solar carport planning permission guide.
Benefits
Three assets in one structure
Generate
Convert car park airspace into clean electricity. A full car park installation can generate 300+ kWp, significantly offsetting grid electricity costs.
Protect
Weather-sheltered parking for staff, visitors and fleet vehicles. Covered parking is a valued workplace amenity that enhances the employee and visitor experience.
Charge
EV chargers integrated directly into carport columns. Vehicles charge from on-site solar generation, reducing both costs and carbon emissions.
Project delivery
Delivery scope

EN 1090 certification
EN 1090 is the European standard governing the fabrication and assembly of structural steelwork. It ensures every steel component is designed, manufactured and erected to certified quality and safety standards. KLY Energy requires EN 1090 certification on all carport structures, providing assurance of structural integrity for the full 25+ year lifespan of the installation.
Planning and Class OA
Solar carports are classified as new permanent structures and generally require planning permission. In England, certain installations may qualify for prior approval under Class OA permitted development rights, offering a faster route to approval. KLY Energy assesses each site and manages the planning process from pre-application enquiry through to approval.
Suitability
Best for
Depots and logistics
Large vehicle yards with ample surface area for high-capacity carport arrays.
Retail parks
Visible sustainability infrastructure that enhances the customer experience.
Councils and NHS
Public sector sites with net-zero mandates and large staff car parks.
Hotels and leisure
Premium covered parking with EV charging as a guest amenity.
Communal car parks
Shared parking facilities where rooftop solar is not available as an option.
Corporate campuses
Multi-building sites where car parks offer the largest untapped generation potential.
Typical scale: 30 kWp (4-bay) to 300+ kWp (full car park)
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Solar carports are classified as new permanent structures and typically require planning permission. However, in England, certain commercial solar canopies may qualify for prior approval under Class OA permitted development rights, which provides a faster approval route. KLY Energy assesses planning requirements for each site and manages the application process on your behalf.
